CALCE Initiates Tire Prognostics Project
The objective of this study is to determine if statistical techniques can predict automotive tire failure based on tire and vehicle streaming data. The benefits of automotive tire prognostics are obvious when one considers the fact that more than half of American drivers check their tires less than once a month. This study will focus on tire and vehicle parameters that contribute to tire failure, such as ambient and inner tire temperatures, tire pressure, and vehicle speed. Using statistical techniques such as Multivariate State Estimation Technique (MSET) and Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), this study will attempt to detect tire failures, ranging from leaks to blowouts, as a result of tire fatigue.
